Colorado's New AI Law: What You Need to Know

This past spring Colorado enacted the Colorado Artificial Intelligence Act. It is the first comprehensive AI legislation in the US and takes effect in February 2026.

This Act places significant responsibilities on developers and deployers of high-risk AI systems to protect consumers from algorithmic discrimination.

High-risk AI systems are those that influence critical decisions in areas like education, employment, finance, healthcare, and more.

The responsibilities imposed on businesses by the Act include impact assessments, consumer transparency requirements, and mechanisms for consumers to contest adverse decisions influenced by AI.

Businesses should start turning their attention to how to navigate the new legislation and stay complaint in their operations.
